PITCH COMPETITIONS
eMerge Americas and the University of Miami in partnership with the Hemispheric University Consortium held the annual multi-city tour to host startup pitch competitions at a few member institutions with stops in São Paulo, Mexico City, Puebla, Bogotá and Miami
COMPLIANCE BOOTCAMP
The University of Miami Herbert Business School offered a “Compliance Bootcamp” and extended an invitation to the other universities in the consortium. Students from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia, participated in this bootcamp.
WORLDS OF JOURNALISM
– Also as part of the “Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS)” in Latin American and the Caribbean, research groups from Tec de Monterrey, Universidad de las Americas Puebla and the University of Miami were in the process of working on a project that looks at the challenges facing Latin American Journalists considering their social and political contexts.

OCEAN HEALTH VOYAGE INITIATIVE BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
Produced by the School of Communication at the University of Miami, the Ocean Health Voyage is a groundbreaking online course filmed professionally in ten international locations and taught by some of the most distinguished marine scientists around the world. 8 out of 14 consortium universities are offering the course hemispherically.
MINORITY HEALTH INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH TRAINING
The “Minority Health International Research Training” program at the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami, to encourage and equip undergraduate minority students to pursue careers in health disparities research, through special training experiences. Students are paired with international mentors.
2nd LEADERSHIP MEETING, JAMAICA
During the second leadership meeting in Kingston, Jamaica hosted by The University of the West Indies, leaders formalized the Consortium operations and committed to creating structures to support collaborations in research, education, and innovation.
HUC SECC and HUC IO
The Hemispheric University Consortium Social Entrepreneurship Collaborative Center (HUC SECC) and Hemispheric University Consortium Innovation Observatory (HUC IO) groups were conformed.
COVID-19 PANDEMIC
The onsite HUC leadership meeting scheduled during the eMerge Americas conference was cancelled because of the pandemic. Leaders decided to virtually convene in Zoom and shared about the situation and actions in their institutions, highlighting the importance of cross border collaboration. They agreed to share online resources to confronting Covid-19, hosting webinars with experts to transition to online learning and perform joint or collaborative courses using technology – online, augmented reality, mixed reality, etc. A proposal for a Collaborative Library resources was also presented and approved. Charter and Policies and Procedures documents were approved and digital signed by the presidents.
BEST PRACTICES IN ONLINE EDUCATION DELIVERY
The Virtual HUC Series was launched led by experts from the HUC institutions to support faculty to transition to online learning with 6 webinars (3 in Spanish, 3 in English) addressing three topics: 1) Best Practices in the Transition to Online Learning, 2) Experiences in the Delivery of Online Education, and 3) “Transitioning to the New Normal.
HUC COIL LAUNCH
The Collaborative Online International Learning (HUC COIL) initiative was launched with the aim of creating new virtual opportunities for our students, faculty, and researchers.
HUC WEBSITE LAUNCH
HUC Working Group convened to continue working in different initiatives and launched the HUC Website. The new website enables academic collaborations across a group of top tier universities to confront diverse challenges in the hemisphere and the globe, share experiences, and construct shared solutions. Including. Two highly strategic initiatives are showcased on this new platform:

COVID-19 Hemispheric Response. An interactive resource where member institutions share knowledge and assets that address the current crisis: Covid-19 websites, resources for students and faculty, online and collaborative resources, research and innovation projects, facilities supporting the emergency, and webinars.
GLOBAL WEEK (I), BY TEC DE MONTERREY
As part of the HUC COIL portfolio of projects, Tec de Monterrey launched Global Week where students connected with other students and professors from different cultures to share ideas and discuss new ways to put societies on a better path. Faculty and students from University of Miami, York University, Universidad de San Francisco de Quito and Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra participated in this first semester.
HUC SDG INITIATIVE (I) BY UNIVERSIDAD SAN FRANCISCO DE QUITO
As part of the HUC COIL portfolio of projects, hosted by the HUC and Universidad San Francisco de Quito, the Hemispheric Student Dialogues on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consisted of a series of workshops aimed at promoting intercultural dialogues and digital skills across the hemisphere. Students from 11 institution members joined workshops to discuss key challenges of the 21st century led by faculty from Universidad de Costa Rica, Universidad Austral, University of Miami, The University of the West Indies, and Universidad San Francisco de Quito.
COLLABORATION USING AUGMENTED REALITY
The initiative Hemispheric Education u0026amp; Collaboration using Augmented Reality shared a blog about a collaboration between University of Miami and Tecnologico de Monterrey. The goal of this project is to develop a remote collaboration application that will push the current boundaries of real-time collaborative AR in the hemispheric
SUSTAINABLE ON THE GO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE BY YORK UNIVERSITY
The HUC.IO Website was showcased during the Sustainable on the Go International Conference co-organized by York University and the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education Towards Sustainability in cooperation with other international organizations. The 2021 Toronto Declaration on the Future of Sustainable and Inclusive Internationalization in Higher Education calls for the joint development of innovative frameworks and new models of practice in the education programmes within the framework of the SDGs. The Globally Networked Learning (GNL) Project at York University has provided meaningful collabotions to the HUC COIL initiative bringing researchers, instructors and students together to imagine and experiment with the idea of ‘global thinking’ as a critical skill to acquire for globally networked working environments
HUC SUMMIT OF LIBRARY DIRECTORS
Library directors of thirteen institutional members of the Hemispheric University Consortium met on Friday February 19, 2021. The focus of this inaugural Summit of HUC Library Directors was exploring the possibilities of achieving greater impact through collaboration. The directors agreed to formalize the network by holding monthly meetings. The directors also endorsed four specific initiatives during the coming year. The four initiatives include: archiving and disseminating the results of HUC research; developing a webinar series focused on skills-based training in areas such as digital literacy; creating an expertise database across HUC libraries; and establishing a web presence.
PATHWAYS TO PROSPERITY WORKSHOP BY TEC DE MONTERREY
The first cohort of students participating in the Virtual Workshops Series Pathways to Prosperity (Caminos hacia la Prosperidad) started. This project aims to promote a new class of social entrepreneurs and the development of skills for social innovation. Workshops are conducted by faculty from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Universidad Austral, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and University of Miami in partnership with an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, startups, experts, companies, etc.
CONVERSACIONES DE FUTURO BY PUC CHILE
Launch of the first week of Conversaciones de Futuro: COVID-ODS. The objective of this project led by CoLab Innovación Social UC – PUC Chile is to facilitate conversations around the 2030 Agenda, bringing together academic experts in initiatives that are currently focused on responding to each of the 17 SDGs, to promote the development of thematic groups that will allow the 2030 Agenda to be promoted throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. 68 panelists with more than +15,000 participants have joined the online events that will have conversations in August-September and November-December.
HUC.IO MATCHMAKING EVENT (II) BY UNIVERSIDAD DE LOS ANDES
HUC.IO initiative held the second Matchmaking event hosted by Universidad de los Andes for Virtual Research Internships. 29 internship research projects in different disciplines are hosted by the following universities: University of the Andes, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, University of Miami, Universidad Austral, and Universidad Andres Bello.

UC Chile rector was elected as the Vice President of the HUC. York University president and Universidad San Francisco de Quito rector will serve on the HUC Executive Committee.

The conversations consist of a series of webinars focused on sharing experiences and challenges in the process of ensuring access to relevant and quality information resources for academic communities.

The Funding Experts Group met for their first meeting where they shared best practices and identified areas of collaboration.
SECRETARIAT VIRTUAL INTERNSHIPS
The HUC Secretariat offered 3 virtual internships for the positions of social media, communications and operations. 3 students, 2 from UM and 1 for UPCH were selected.
THE HUC SHOWCASE IN UNESCO-IESAL MAJOR REPORT
As part of UNESCO-IESALC work on reimagining higher education internationalization, the HUC is one of the alliances case studies for our Virtual Student Mobility programs and experiences.
THE HUC SIGNED AN ALLIANCE WITH WISE
The HUC signed a new alliance with WISE (Women in STEM) funded by the IDB Lab to extended the program in Colombia, Chile and Dominican Republic with 4 pilot projects.

New Governance of the Consortium
Dr. Ignacio Sánchez Díaz, Rector of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, starts his two-year term as the new President of the Hemispheric University Consortium.
During his presidency, he will be working closely with the Vice-president Rector Julián Rodriguez, Rector of Universidad Austral and the Executive Committee: Dr. Rhonda Lenton, President of York University; Dr. Enrique Castañeda Saldaña, Rector Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia; and Pbro. Dr. Secilio Espinal, Rector Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra.
