Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES), Colombia, will host the 2026 General Assembly of the Hemispheric University Consortium (HUC) on August 31 and September 1. The event will bring together leaders and representatives from universities across the Americas to address shared challenges and strengthen hemispheric collaboration in research and education.
The Assembly will focus on two main areas of work: research and education, fostering the exchange of experiences and the development of projects aimed at expanding the impact of universities throughout the Americas.
One of the key topics of this year’s edition will be sustainability and climate change, featuring a dialogue among university presidents that will bring together perspectives from both the northern and southern regions of the continent. Participants will also reflect on the role of universities in educating globally minded leaders who can understand diverse contexts and respond responsibly to the social, economic, and environmental challenges facing their societies.
In addition to reviewing the progress of the consortium’s ongoing initiatives, participants will work on defining HUC’s strategic priorities for 2027. The goal is to transform this shared vision into concrete, long-term projects with broad engagement from member institutions.
New Members Strengthening the Hemispheric Network
This General Assembly will also mark an important milestone in the consortium’s history with the addition of two new member institutions: the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States and the Université de Montréal in Canada.
These additions will strengthen North America’s representation within HUC and expand opportunities for collaboration among institutions from different regions of the continent. They will also contribute new expertise, experiences, and perspectives that will enrich dialogue and cooperation across the hemisphere.
A Collective Response to Shared Challenges
At a time when major challenges transcend national borders, HUC continues to consolidate its role as a platform where universities from diverse contexts come together around common goals.
Bringing institutions from different countries into a shared space enables a deeper understanding of how common challenges are experienced across the region, facilitates the exchange of knowledge, and supports the development of solutions informed by multiple perspectives. This diversity remains one of the consortium’s greatest strengths, both in advancing research and in preparing students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Expanding Opportunities for Collaboration
Among the Assembly’s primary objectives is the strengthening of initiatives already underway, while creating new opportunities for collaboration among researchers, faculty members, and students.
In the area of research, participants will seek to build on connections established through the HUC Seed Fund and the Virtual Research Internship Program. In education, efforts will focus on expanding international learning opportunities through short-term programs, virtual collaborative learning experiences between courses, and social innovation initiatives.
The workshops scheduled throughout the Assembly will be designed to identify shared interests, develop proposals, and define action plans for the coming year. With the participation of the consortium’s new members, organizers expect the meeting to conclude with a concrete cooperation agenda and a renewed commitment from universities to lead and support new hemispheric initiatives.
