Development of digital collections: experience of the Library System of the University of Costa Rica, 2000-2020

OBJECTIVE

To share the experience developed by the SIBDI-UCR in the process of creating digital collections to support academic research and teaching activities.

DESCRIPTION

In order to contribute to the continuous improvement of the Institution’s substantive academic research and teaching processes, a proposal was made to develop a collection of electronic information resources that would expand the university community’s access to publications with a high scientific and academic content, as well as broaden the thematic coverage of the collection. To achieve this goal over time, the starting point was the analysis of the main requirements of the research and teaching areas, as well as the appropriate mechanisms within the Institution’s reach to satisfy them. The trinomial University Administration – Academic Community – Library System coordinating actions, gave very positive results in the conformation of a very robust electronic access collection to support the academic processes of research and teaching, as well as in a university community increasingly empowered regarding their information skills. During the webinar, the institutional strategy, the actions developed and a summary of the main lessons learned from this process will be presented.
